American Pie '98

by Greg Banerian

A long long time ago
I remember how DePalma used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had a shot
That I could give it what I got
And others might be laughing for a while.

But campus thought cops made me shiver,
Controlling jokes that I'd deliver.
Banished me for humor,
P.C. became a tumor.

And I do dream for a return ride
To when hopes were pure and minds were wide,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the spirit died.

So bye bye Miss American Pie,
Frozen Fat-Free and No Sugar takes the spice out of life,
And good old boys drink their Starbucks and whine,
"If I had a Bimmer life would be fine,
If I had a Bimmer life would be fine...."

Did you watch the Barney Show,
Play your mindless games on Nintendo,
Tell me how low can you go?

Now do you remember Rock and Roll,
Can Techno ever touch your soul,
And can you teach us anything, anymore?

Well I know that you got HIV
'Cause you slept around once too many,
You should know enough to choose,
Roll the dice and sometimes you lose.

Now you're a pimply homely teenage fink,
Watching MTV you never learn to think,
No matter how far, further down we sink
The day your spirit died.

And now we're singing

Bye bye Miss American Pie,
Frozen Fat-Free and No Sugar takes the spice out of life,
And good old boys drink their Starbucks and whine,
"If I had a Bimmer life would be fine,
If I had a Bimmer life would be fine...."

Now for ten years we've heard the Gen X fate,
"Our life just sucks while yours is great.
Hail Cobain. Bang, bye bye."

Would-be-Monroe toots on Bubba's flute,
We wonder why, when the point is moot,
The Starrs don't seem to fall down from the sky.

Oh and while the markets rise and fall,
Lies, deceit don't count at all.
We all praise the mighty buck
While we get [what rhymes with buck]

And while Johnny figures out how to read,
Polygram plants 'nother rotten seed,
With rehashed oldies spun in greed
The day your spirit died.

And we start singing

Bye bye Miss American Pie,
Frozen Fat-Free and No Sugar takes the spice out of life,
And good old boys drink their Starbucks and whine,
"If I had a Bimmer life would be fine,
If I had a Bimmer life would be fine...."

Hammer Slammer in a Berlin Kammer
The wall went down like the Prez'dent and her,
Remnants sold in Amusement parks..........

Changin' powers everywhere,
Chinese gov'ment had a scare
But Beijing took care of that one after dark.

Oh the Gulf was there for fun and sun,
Till Saddam barked and cocked his gun
His men got up to dance
But they never got the chance.

'Cause Great Satan played for overkill,
The burning fields refused to still,
In His name what was revealed
The day your spirit died?

And so we're singing

Bye bye Miss American Pie,
Frozen Fat-Free and No Sugar takes the spice out of life,
And good old boys drink their Starbucks and whine,
"If I had a Bimmer life would be fine,
If I had a Bimmer life would be fine...."

And now we are all in one place,
Doing 9 to 5 for what's-his-face,
Just like good old mom and dad

So come on, buy that PC, buy MS
The Gates of hell decide the rest
'Cause choice is by it's very nature bad...

And just as we call on uncle Sherm
The new release the table turns
No Window open there
To bring life some fresh air

And while Bundy's wisdom fills the brink
We save the whales and flash the mink
Pseudo-Intellects say what not to think
The day your spirit died.

Till then we're singing

Bye bye Miss American Pie,
Frozen Fat-Free and No Sugar takes the spice out of life,
And good old boys drink their Starbucks and whine,
"If I had a Bimmer life would be fine,
If I had a Bimmer life would be fine...."

I remember when we sang the blues
And polished off with surfer tunes
But those times have gone away.

And I went down to camp the coast
Where years ago we'd daily roast
But the sign said after dark we couldn't stay.

And on the TV children scream
>From corners neither known nor seen,
But scarcely actions taken
Result in dreams awakened.

And the freedoms that we held so dear,
Expression, thought, and our lives to steer,
They caught the last train out of here
The day the spirit died.

So bye bye Miss American Pie,
Frozen Fat-Free and No Sugar takes the spice out of life,
And good old boys drink their Starbucks and whine,
"If I had a Bimmer life would be fine."
